South Africa faces significant hurdles in STEM education. For example, only about 7% of matriculants meet the entry requirements for STEMrelated degrees. National figures also show that universities produced about 32 000 STEM graduates in 2023/24, falling short of the target by 13.6%. Many learners, especially in rural and under-resourced communities, lack exposure to hands-on science and technology, which limits interest in STEM careers and contributes to persistent skills gaps.
