This is largely due to sustainability drawing its strength from science\, while its ideological underpinnings often remain unnoticed. In this lecture\, Professor Ramutsindela will explore how science informs understandings of sustainability\, how the ideology of sustainability is reinforced by the belief that there is nothing ideological about sustainability as a concept and practice\, and highlight the implications of the intersection of sustainability and ideology for sustainability transformations in Africa. \n\nAbout Prof Maano Ramutsindela \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Maano Ramutsindela is the UP-UCT Future Africa Research Chair in Sustainability Transformations\, a joint initiative between the University of Pretoria and the University of Cape Town. He is also a Professor of Human Geography at UCT’s Department of Environmental and Geographical Science. A Canon Collins Scholar\, he holds a PhD in Geography from Royal Holloway\, University of London\, and a Master’s in Geography from the University of the North (Turfloop). He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Science at UCT and is a Fellow of the Society of South African Geographers and a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. Internationally\, he has held visiting fellowships at Harvard University and the University of Western Australia\, Distinguished Chair at Macalester College and Inaugural Guest Professor at the University of Geneva. His current research is on socioecological relations and the political ecology of peace parks.
