Dr Martin Kizito\, Dean of Social Sciences\, Uganda Christian University \nThe role of higher education institutions in integrating entrepreneurship and innovation in public policy teaching \n11:45–12:00 | Concluding Remarks \n• Dr Jessika Bohlmann\, Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences\, University of Pretoria \n\nAbstract\nIn recent decades\, there has been growing recognition of the role of Science\, Technology and Innovation (STI) in advancing inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development. With Africa’s rapidly expanding youth population\, STI is increasingly viewed as a key driver of youth entrepreneurship\, job creation and long-term economic growth. Yet the STI ecosystem that should support emerging entrepreneurs remains fragmented\, under-funded and insufficiently integrated across the continent. \nAt the same time\, many African entrepreneurs and industrialists continue to look to Western countries for models of innovation and development. These relationships are often shaped by a donor–recipient dynamic rooted in traditional North–South partnerships. However\, new partnership models centred on a “Look East” orientation have gained traction in recent years. Initiatives such as the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) and programmes like the Africa-Japan Collaborative Research (AJ-CORE) illustrate the potential of Africa–Asia cooperation in STI and innovation. \nThe combination of Africa’s STI ecosystem challenges and the opportunities emerging from Asia–Africa partnerships presents an ideal context for deeper collaboration between public and private actors on both continents. Universities are uniquely positioned to bridge geographic\, institutional and informational gaps through their interdisciplinary expertise\, global networks and role as neutral convenors. Through collaborative partnerships\, African and Asian universities can bring diverse stakeholders into dialogue\, co-produce policy-relevant knowledge\, and foster innovation ecosystems that drive entrepreneurship and socio-economic development.

SUMMARY:African Political Ecologies Learning Lab
DESCRIPTION:Future Africa invites you to the African Political Ecologies Learning Lab\, hosted by Professor Maano Ramutsindela\, the UP–UCT Future Africa Research Chair in Sustainability Transformations\, in partnership with the Future Earth Leadership Centre. \nDate: Thursday\, 23 October 2025\nTime: 09:00 to 16:00 SAST\nLocation: Online via Zoom. Please register using this LINK to attend\nEnquiries: Contact Dr Claire Chagwiza at claire.chagwiza@futureafrica.science \n\nThe critiques of the Western canon on the relations between society and nature and the consequent practices are useful but have not gone far enough to provide global themes in tune with the African condition. What is the blueprint for how and why we should research the society-nature relations from African(ist) perspectives? How do those perspectives advance progressive policies? The learning lab will engage these questions through an interdisciplinary lens to delineate the scope and directions of African political ecologies (APEs). The main outcome of this engagement is to develop a virtual learning lab for APEs. \n\nHosted by: \n \nProf Maano Ramutsindela is a Professor of Human Geography at the University of Cape Town\, and also holds the UP-UCT Future Africa Research Chair in Sustainability Transformations. His research explores socioecological relations and the political ecology of peace parks. Read more

SUMMARY:Sustainability: an intersection of science and ideology
DESCRIPTION:Future Africa (FA) at the University of Pretoria (UP) cordially invites you to a lecture by Professor Maano Ramutsindela\, UP-UCT Future Africa Research Chair in Sustainability Transformations. \nDate: Thursday\, 3 April 2025 \nTime: 12:00 to 14:00 SAST \nLocation: Future Africa\, Hillcrest Campus\, University of Pretoria & Online (hybrid event) \nEnquiries: Email Clarietta Chagwiza at clarietta.chagwiza@futureafrica.science \nRSVP by Monday\, 31 March 2025 \nREGISTER HERE\n \nAbout the Lecture \n\n\nThe concept of sustainability has become a defining mantra of our time\, shaping global discourse\, influencing human behaviour\, guiding philanthropic actions\, and serving as a soft approach to addressing hard realities. This is largely due to sustainability drawing its strength from science\, while its ideological underpinnings often remain unnoticed. In this lecture\, Professor Ramutsindela will explore how science informs understandings of sustainability\, how the ideology of sustainability is reinforced by the belief that there is nothing ideological about sustainability as a concept and practice\, and highlight the implications of the intersection of sustainability and ideology for sustainability transformations in Africa. \n\nAbout Prof Maano Ramutsindela \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Maano Ramutsindela is the UP-UCT Future Africa Research Chair in Sustainability Transformations\, a joint initiative between the University of Pretoria and the University of Cape Town. He is also a Professor of Human Geography at UCT’s Department of Environmental and Geographical Science. A Canon Collins Scholar\, he holds a PhD in Geography from Royal Holloway\, University of London\, and a Master’s in Geography from the University of the North (Turfloop). He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Science at UCT and is a Fellow of the Society of South African Geographers and a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. Internationally\, he has held visiting fellowships at Harvard University and the University of Western Australia\, Distinguished Chair at Macalester College and Inaugural Guest Professor at the University of Geneva. His current research is on socioecological relations and the political ecology of peace parks. He is the author of Transfrontier Conservation in Africa: At the Confluence of Capital\, Politics\, and Nature and co-editor of several recent books\, including Africa and the Sustainable Development Goals (Springer\, 2020) and The Violence of Conservation in Africa (Edward Elgar\, 2022)…Read more\n \n  \nDOWNLOAD THE PDF INVITATION
