SUMMARY:African Political Ecologies Learning Lab
DESCRIPTION:Future Africa invites you to the African Political Ecologies Learning Lab\, hosted by Professor Maano Ramutsindela\, the UP–UCT Future Africa Research Chair in Sustainability Transformations\, in partnership with the Future Earth Leadership Centre. \nDate: Thursday\, 23 October 2025\nTime: 09:00 to 16:00 SAST\nLocation: Online via Zoom. Please register using this LINK to attend\nEnquiries: Contact Dr Claire Chagwiza at claire.chagwiza@futureafrica.science \n\nThe critiques of the Western canon on the relations between society and nature and the consequent practices are useful but have not gone far enough to provide global themes in tune with the African condition. What is the blueprint for how and why we should research the society-nature relations from African(ist) perspectives? How do those perspectives advance progressive policies? The learning lab will engage these questions through an interdisciplinary lens to delineate the scope and directions of African political ecologies (APEs). The main outcome of this engagement is to develop a virtual learning lab for APEs. \n\nHosted by: \n \nProf Maano Ramutsindela is a Professor of Human Geography at the University of Cape Town\, and also holds the UP-UCT Future Africa Research Chair in Sustainability Transformations. His research explores socioecological relations and the political ecology of peace parks. Read more

SUMMARY:Roundtable Discussion on the Politics of Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:The concepts of politics and sustainability are loaded with various\, and evolving meanings and interpretations in their own terms and relationally. This Roundtable aims to reflect on the concept of power and its relationship with\, and manifestation in sustainability discourses and practices. To this end\, the following questions are asked: What constitutes the politics of sustainability? How does the environment and society feature in that politics? How is sustainability linked to the past and futurisms? Who has the power to define socioecological futures\, and with what effects? These questions are posed here as a source of reflection from different vantage points rather than a search for ‘correct answers.

SUMMARY:Future Africa Transdisciplinary (TD) Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:The University of Pretoria’s Future Africa (FA) is pleased to invite you to join the latest Transdisciplinary (TD) Dialogue\, titled: The Transformative Impact of Transdisciplinarity on Research. \nDate: Wednesday\, 28 August 2024\nTime: 09:30 am to 10:30 am SAST\nVenue: Online on Zoom\nRSVP Link: https://bit.ly/4do9GxE\n \nFor more information\, please contact Dr Hester du Plessis at hester.duplessis@up.ac.za \n\nThis TD Dialogue aims to build a common understanding of how transdisciplinary research can drive significant transformation. The dialogue will focus on the philosophical discourse surrounding the transcendence of diverse\, co-created knowledge. It will explore the necessary transgressions required to address complex local and global challenges effectively. \nJoin us for an engaging discussion featuring our guest speaker Professor Matthias Kaiser in conversation with Dr Neeraj Mistry\, Deputy Director at Future Africa\, both live from the AFINO Conference in Oslo\, Norway. \n\nSpeaker \n\n\n\nProfessor Matthias Kaiser is Professor Emeritus at the Center for the Study of the Sciences and Humanities (SVT) at the University of Bergen\, and Prof. II (10%) at the NTNU in Trondheim\, an affiliated Fellow at the Koi Tū: Centre for Informed Futures\, University of Auckland\, and Editor-in-Chief of the Springer journal Food Ethics. Presently he is a Senior Researcher at NORSUS: Norwegian Institute for Sustainability Research. His areas of expertise include philosophy of science (Dr.phil.)\, ethics of science\, food ethics\, technology assessment and science-for-policy. His topics of interest include but are not restricted to aquaculture\, seafood and food ethics\, value studies\, the precautionary principle\, uncertainty & complexity\, practical ethics\, integrity in science\, and public participation. Matthias Kaiser has more than 170 publications\, and Google Scholar (10.01.2024) cites him with 2759 citations\, h-index of 29 and i10-index of 59. He has extensive expertise and experience in methods of practical ethics and qualitative and quantitative research methods in social science. He has documented skills in project leadership and advice for inter- and transdisciplinary research. \n\n\n\nThis conversation will be broadly informed by the International Science Council’s 2023 report\, Looking at the Future of Transdisciplinary Research.
