Future Africa is a flagship institute of the University of Pretoria located on the university’s Hillcrest campus. The campus offers a tranquil, yet modern environment away from the busier Hatfield center.

The postgraduate residence at Future Africa offers accommodation for PhD students, research and post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scholars of Future Africa. The residence offers bachelor apartments, communal kitchens and dining spaces, as well as a fully equipped laundry. The rooms have an open space design each with a study area and en-suite bathroom (shower).

The amenities at Future Africa include a dining hall for residents who prefer not to self-cater. The dining hall may provide breakfast, lunch, dinner and take-away meals on a pre-order basis, which cost is not included in the monthly rates. Future Africa also hosts a fully furnished Research Commons with 24-hour access, and library services providing full access to e-resources and repositories, and regular onsite library assistance.

Many shopping centers are conveniently located in the vicinity of Future Africa, and residents can enjoy the restaurants in the area. Residents will also be in close proximity of the UP Sports Center gymnasium, High Performance Centre, Hillcrest public swimming pool and the Hatfield Gautrain station. A scheduled bus shuttle service is available to residents.

Residents are required to sign a rental agreement that is subject to annual renewal. A code of conduct and house rules apply.

Rates for 2020 include:

One bedroom units at R5'800 per month.

Bachelor units at R5'200 per month; sharing communal kitchens and public lounge areas.

A refundable deposit is payable, with the first month's rental, at the concluding of an agreement.


Rates for 2021 is under review, and will be communicated as soon as possible.

Applicants who elect to rent a unit until the end of December 2020, will have the first right of refusal to conclude an renewal agreement for 2021; please also note that contracts can be terminated by appropriate notice from the tenant.

What is the character of the Future Africa residence?

Future Africa is an academically orientated residence that has been designed with the needs of postgraduate students and scholars in mind.  Residents have the opportunity and are expected to participate in the academic and research related activities of the Future Africa community of scholars.

Is there parking available on the premises?

Safe and secure parking is available inside the premises for residents only.

Can I share my room with a fellow student?

Rental is per person and not per room. The majority of rooms cannot be shared and sub-letting is not allowed. However, there are some rooms that allow for sharing at an additional rate.

What is made available in the rooms, i.e. do I need to bring my own cooking utensils, fridge for self-catering purposes?

Communal kitchens are equipped with stoves. Each room has a fridge. Basic furniture is provided (bed, cupboard, table and chair), but all other requirements such as bedding and utensils will be for your own provision.

Is a deposit payable prior to occupation, and how much is it?

A R5'000.00 breakage deposit is payable with the signing of the agreement, and is refundable after an inspection report upon termination of the lease agreement.

Is transport available from Future Africa campus to other campuses of UP?

There is a dedicated bus shuttle for Future Africa residents leaving daily from Future Africa to Hatfield campus. The shuttle schedule is found here: https://www.futureafrica.science/

Is WIFI available in the room and on the premises and is it included in the rental cost?

WIFI is available free of charge.

Are there disability units on the premises?

Future Africa has disabled-friendly ground floor units available; should a live-in caretaker be required, additional unit allocation may be necessary.

Are there housekeeping facilities available?

Limited housekeeping services are available at an additional cost to the resident.

What is the policy on noise and having overnight guests in my room?

Future Africa is a scholarly campus conducive to academic activities and promotes consideration towards fellow residents. Additional charges apply for overnight guests.
