Work and Research

Hamada Abdelrahman is Associate Professor of Soil Science at Cairo University. His main research area is soil organic matter & its response to global changes (land use change; climate change) and it is extended to sustainable land management, organic farming, soil biodiversity & soil role in the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus. He has been postdoctoral & visiting scholar at the USDA, University of Bari (Italy), Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany), Aarhus University (Denmark) where his research investigated soil, environment & food production. Together, with short visits to several EU institutions, Hamada developed interdisciplinary research interests & skills & expanded his circles & networks for collaboration.

Contributions to Science and Society

Dr Abdelrahman started investigating soil organic matter (SOM) & its response to land management in 2009 & since then he works on understanding/exploring the nature of different forms of SOM & their response to management practices. Understand the nature & composition of the different SOM forms will help evaluating agricultural management practices and may result in C retention in soil & consequent reduction of CO2 emissions. Hamada extends his knowledge in soil science, organic farming and related areas to circles of students, colleagues, alumni network and farmers. He has been offering support and assistance to postgraduate student and junior staff at Cairo University (Agriculture) for proposal writing, and different application preparations. Hamada founded the Egyptian chapter of the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS) hoping for possible collaboration among Egyptian and Int. colleagues. Hamada believes that the best impact a scientist may make is being a real help or a motivation for a successful student.
