Work and Research

Throughout my postgraduate education I had a strong component of research that equipped the skills I implemented in all my research achievements. In my quest for new and innovative ideas to deploy in my academic and research work, in 2014 I applied for and received a EUROSA staff mobility scholarship which enabled me to spend a month at the University of Antwerp in Belgium where I initiated an active research collaboration. For seven years in succession I received the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence in Research Awards. At present, I am the co-chair of the South African Young Academy of Science. I have over the years participated in many academic, research and community development initiatives, capacity building and mentoring activities.

My contribution to science and its impact on society

During 2013-2014 I worked on the household vulnerability to food and water insecurity project as a coordinator. The project did not only focused on the normal research processes and phases but also focused on the development of human capital. Since the community served to provide knowledge regarding the focus of the research project, unemployed graduates in the same communities received training on necessary and required skills not only on data collection but also communication skills and human relations. All that were made possible under my leadership. Other than that the results that were collected were also shared with the communities for them to gain on the local knowledge of household vulnerability, common coping strategies and understanding the causes through the lenses of children, youth, adults and community leaders. In 2015-2016 I successfully led a project on adolescents’ judgement regarding financial hardship in the family. That project’s intention was youth development as it equipped with life skills, coping strategies and also caring for change in their own future life. Currently I am leading a project on "Development of an empowerment programme towards promotion of responsible citizenship amongst in-school youth in Vhembe District".

At present, I am the co-chair of the South African Young Academy of Science.
