Work and Research

My focus is on understanding the diversity and distribution of soil rhizobia, which are bacteria that live in association with leguminous plants. These bacteria are capable of transforming atmospheric nitrogen gas into forms like ammonium that can be taken up by plants, hence supporting their establishment and survival in harsh environments. Such knowledge can inform departments of Environment, Forestry and Agriculture on policies formulations, management and conservation of natural ecosystems. In addition, identification of such bacteria has potential for development of environmentally friendly fertilizers which can improve crop production. This can contribute to achievement of a hunger free Africa.
