Work and Research
Karen Botes focuses on the potential of living walls to improve environmental benefits and sustainability through investigating the possibility of growing selected African Orphan Crop and Traditional African Vegetables in living wall systems. Her current PhD research is entitled "A performance assessment of selected African Orphan Crop and Traditional African Vegetable species in modular living wall systems, in Gauteng, South Africa". Her research maintains that food production through living walls in urban environments in South African cities can be investigated as a possible response strategy to food security, in developing economies where poverty and rapid urbanisation pose great challenges.
