Work and Research
I am interested in identifying candidate genes for immunity in chickens. These candidate genes can be used to select for disease resistant chickens by using marker assisted selection. Recently, we reported the candidacy of TLR4 and Mx genes to Salmonella and Newcastle resistance in an Indonesian chicken breed. The favourable genotypes of the 2 genes will be used as markers for the selection of the chickens resistant to the diseases. Prophylactics, vaccines and antibiotics are insufficient to eradicate the diseases. Antibiotics also lead to the formation of antibiotic-resistant pathogens and antibiotics residues in the poultry meat and products. As a result, selection for resistant chickens is more appropriate.
