Work and Research
As a member of the Hypertension in Africa Research Team (HART), my research focus is on factors associated with hypertension (high blood pressure), particularly in Africans. These include kidney function, salt intake and sociodemographic factors affecting health outcomes. It is known that populations of African ancestry tend to develop hypertension at a younger age and experience adverse cardiovascular outcomes such as stroke, kidney disease and heart failure. With the various research projects that I am involved in, we already see the negative impact that low socioeconomic status and stress have on cardiovascular health in both young and middle-aged populations.
