The White Paper on Science, Technology, and Innovation was approved by Cabinet in March 2019 ensure the growing role of STI in offering solutions to developmental challenges of the country. The White Paper emphasizes the core themes of inclusivity, transformation, and partnerships with the aim to foster a national system of innovation (NSI) in which creativity, learning, and entrepreneurship can flourish. It also promises a new science and technology landscape for South Africa which will be implemented through a series of decadal plans that have been developed in partnership with the relevant role players in industry, academia, civil society, and government.

The half-day seminar is part of the Innovation for Inclusive Development (IID) learning interventions aimed at demonstrating how innovative technology solutions may be used to advance local economic development. The workshop was attended by stakeholders from business, government, public research institutions, higher education institutions, and civil society.
