The Next Einstein Forum (NEF) was launched in 2013 by the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and aims to make Africa the global hub for science and technology. The forum places science at the center of global development efforts during global gatherings. In the presence of political and industry leaders, and with a strong focus on youth and women, the voices of global science leaders have the opportunity to be heard and to have major impact on Africa’s scientific future. The next NEF Global Gathering 2020 will be held on 10-13 March 2020 in Nairobi, Kenya.
On 5 August 2019, the NEF announced their third cohort of 25 fellows. Three of these exceptional researchers are fellows of the Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP).
Dr Vidushi Neergheen-Bhujun from Mauritius and Prof Badre Abdselam from Morocco were selected as inaugural fellows of the ASLP in 2015. Dr Neergheen-Bhujun co-developed a project titled “Flexible Thinkers for Africa” that aimed to increase awareness of educational resources to learners in Africa and to create offline access to these resources through more accessible media. Prof Abdeslam co-developed a project that aimed at promoting and fostering female African leadership in science during his fellowship year.
Dr. Fanelwa Ajayi, a South African researcher, was selected into the 2019 ASLP cohort and attended training in March this year. Dr Ajayi is working on a project titled “Academics at ease Initiative” which aims to create a less stressed and more productive academic life.
The first ASLP fellow to be selected into a NEF cohort was Egyptian Prof Maha Nasr Aly. Prof Aly participated in the 2017-2019 fellowship and aimed to explore what lies beyond nanotechnology in treatment of diseases through the combination of novel biomaterials and formulation of new delivery systems as her Einstein challenge.
