Emmanuel Chukwuma | Present at Pasae, Ghana

Far-LeaF research fellow Dr Emmanuel Chukwuma has been invited to present his research at the 4th the Pan African Society of Agricultural Engineers (PASAE) International Conference in Kumasi, Ghana later this month. The conference will take place at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST).

The aim of the Emergent Researcher Resilience Lab is to bring together Doctoral and Early Career Researchers in the Field of Resilience to share knowledge and expertise. The Centre on 5 October hosted a hybrid Emergent Resilience Researcher Lab session.

Dr Chukwuma is a lecturer in Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering Department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, in Awka, Nigeria. His paper is entitled Environmental Sustainability through the Adoption of Good Agronomic Practices (GAP) by Rice Farmers.

The PASAE conference is a platform for various experts in the field of Agricultural Engineering to converge and proffer solutions to the myriad challenges of food insecurity occasioned by environmental degradation and hopes to make a societal impact for improving food security, sustainable environment, and advancement of agricultural technology in the continent.

Dr Chukwuma is excited that this program is geared towards keeping pace with the global technology and global trends in solving human problems – but tailored to African peculiarities. He sees it as a perfect opportunity and platform to interact and network with various stakeholders in environmental and energy sectors internationally.

He says collaboration with his colleagues in Ghana is a natural fit. “Nigeria and Ghana have similar socio-economic status; they share technology and are closely connected economically. The replication of waste to energy technology in both countries from socio-economic perspective will therefore be seamless. It is expected that the conference and my collaboration visit will provide sufficient platform to discuss problems, progress and projects on waste (majorly on plastic) to energy within the context of the socio-economic climate of the region.”

Dr Chukwuma presented a paper on Rice Straw Management by Rice in Anambra State Value Chain Development Programme at the 22nd International Conference Institution of Agricultural Engineers in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria recently. ”

“I have been in contact with him and hope to strengthen research collaboration with Dr Bessah and yet another FAR-LeaF research fellow in the country, Dr Eric Tutu, head of the FAR-LeaF engineering cluster. The collaboration visit will therefore provide double benefits of interacting with experts in my field and strengthen research collaboration with the two fellows that are affiliated to the host institution of the international conference.”

On a personal level, Dr Chukwuma envisage the end of the strike that has hindered academic activities for some months in the Nigerian universities. “The timing of this visit and the conference is important. Once full academic activities resume, time for opportunities like this will be limited due to the accumulated workload that is anticipated,” he stresses.

One of the KNUST organizers of the conference is Dr Enoch Bessah, another FAR-LeaF research fellow.
