Neema Mduma is the Principle Investigator of 4 projects at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST). The first project is funded by Lacuna Fund in Agriculture which aims at generating machine learning datasets, the second project is funded by the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) which aims at developing deep learning tools for early detection of diseases affecting common bean and irish potato. The third project is funded by African Centre for Technological Studies (ACTS) which aims at developing machine learning tools for early detection of diseases affecting maize and banana. The fourth project funded by Data Science Africa (DSA) aims at building capacity of AI researchers. In addition to that, Neema Mduma lead her team from Tanzania to develop machine learning imagery datasets for maize and banana leaves to allow researchers to develop technological tools for early detection of diseases affecting productivity in Tanzania. The datasets were published in open access repositories (Maize datasets - https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/GDON8Q and Banana datasets - https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/LQUWXW). Also, findings were shared in reputable journals (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dib.2023.109108 and https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dib.2023.109322). The datasets are among the biggest publicly accessible datasets on maize and banana in Tanzania. She also won several prestigious awards and recognitions from local and international organizations such as L’Oréal-UNESCO Young Talents Award Winner for Sub-Saharan Africa, WIMA STEM awarded by Women in Management Africa (WIMA), Excellence in Science and Technology Leadership awarded by Coca-Cola Kwanza Ltd, International Women’s Day Recognition awarded by Puma Energy Tanzania, Women in Science awarded by Next Einstein Forum, Tanzania Sheroes awarded by The Launchpad and Embassy of Sweden and Deep Learning Indaba conference, MIT Press Book award at Nairobi, Kenya. Most recently she has been selected to be a member of Global Young Academy (GYA) and Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF).
