Qinisa Initiative: Strengthening Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Collaboration

The Qinisa Initiative is a groundbreaking programme launched to address the pressing challenges of climate change, agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and food insecurity in Southern Africa. Agriculture, a critical sector in the region, faces threats from climate change and is also a significant contributor to global GHG emissions.

Qinisa will develop a centralised platform for securing validated agricultural GHG data, knowledge, tools, and partnerships aimed at helping researchers identify key areas for investigation, guiding farmers and industry in measuring and reducing emissions intensity for greater sustainability and competitiveness, and supporting governments in achieving real emissions reductions to fulfil national commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Focus areas

  • Livestock
  • Crops
  • Soil organic carbon
  • Pastures

Impact

  • A unified, demand-driven research agenda on agricultural GHG emissions
  • Improved understanding and alignment of existing GHG-related research investments
  • Improved access to validated agricultural GHG footprint data and information
  • Disseminate validated GHG footprint data and information and recommendations to improve them in the in the four agriculture-based sectors.
