Future Africa hosts STEM career exposure tour at UP for school learners
For many young learners, early exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) can shape their aspirations and unlock new possibilities for the future. Recognising this potential, Future Africa’s Community Engagement in One Health, in partnership with the National Zoological Garden’s ZooClub, hosted a three-day Youth in STEM (YiSTEM) Career Exposure Tour from 30 June to 2 July 2025. The initiative introduced 25 enthusiastic high school learners to dynamic career paths in health, veterinary, and agricultural sciences at the University of Pretoria (UP).
Exploring Health Sciences
The tour began at UP’s Faculty of Health Sciences, where learners were warmly welcomed by staff and addressed by the Dean, Professor Flavia Senkubuge. Sharing her journey, she encouraged learners to pursue their goals with determination and vision. The day’s activities included a tour of the advanced training facilities, an introduction to basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and an overview of careers in medicine and pharmacology. The session also highlighted how various careers in health sciences interconnect and contribute to improving lives.
Veterinary Science in Focus
On the second day, the learners visited UP’s Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort, home to Southern Africa’s only veterinary science campus. They toured the skills labs, anatomy rooms, and the bone museum, engaging with academics and students who shared their career journeys. A memorable highlight of the day came from Stella Machaba, a fourth-year veterinary student, whose honesty and encouragement gave learners a clear and relatable view of the dedication and passion required in veterinary medicine. Her insights challenged preconceived ideas and expanded the learners’ understanding of the diverse and critical role veterinarians play in public and environmental health.
Innovation in Agricultural Science
The final day of the tour took learners to Innovation Africa @UP, located at the Hillcrest campus. Here, the learners explored various aspects of agricultural science, from soil health and crop management to dairy production, animal nutrition, and farm operations. The visit reinforced that agriculture is not only about farming but also about science, innovation, and sustainability. The learners also gained valuable insights into how food systems are closely linked to both human health and the environment.
