Climate, Water and Food Nexus
The Future Africa Research Chair in the Climate, Water and Food Nexus advances interdisciplinary research to understand and address the interconnected challenges of climate change, water security, food systems and health in Africa. The Chair works at the intersection of science, policy and practice, bringing together researchers, policymakers, practitioners and communities to co-develop integrated solutions that strengthen climate resilience, improve water and food security, support sustainable agriculture, and enhance health resilience. By combining scientific and indigenous knowledge, the Chair generates evidence that informs policy and practice and contributes to sustainable development across the continent.

Lancet Countdown Africa Regional Centre
Established on 22 April 2025, the Lancet Countdown Africa Regional Centre exists to strengthen African-led evidence at the intersection of climate change and health. The Centre is hosted at Future Africa at the University of Pretoria in South Africa and is one of five regional centres within the global Lancet Countdown network. It generates locally grounded, policy-relevant research that African communities and policymakers urgently need.
UNU HUB on United Nations University Hub on Resilient Environment, Agriculture, Climate and Health for Africa (UNU REACH-AFRICA)
The UNU Hub on Resilient Environment, Agriculture, Climate and Health for Africa (REACH-AFRICA) hosted at the University of Pretoria’s Future Africa platform is committed to advancing scientific understanding, developing innovative solutions, and training the skilled workforce needed to address Africa’s interconnected water, food, agricultural, environmental, climate, health, and sustainability challenges.
The UNU Hub on REACH-AFRICA is established in partnership with the UNU Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) and is the first UNU Hub established in Africa and the Global South.
